SYNOPSIS

          HEIDELBERG, LATE 19TH CENTURY. MARIE LIEB, A PATIENT IN A PSYCHIATRIC HOSPITAL, TEARS UP BED LINEN AND USES THE SCRAPS TO CREATE DELICATE, ENIGMATIC FIGURES ON THE FLOOR OF HER CELL. LEFT ALONE, SHE FINDS A LANGUAGE OF HER OWN AND A ROOM OF HER OWN.  OVER A CENTURY LATER, AN ARTIST STUMBLES ACROSS PHOTOGRAPHS OF MARIE'S WORK. SHE WANTS TO KNOW MORE, BUT MARIE'S MEDICAL FILE HAS NEVER BEEN FOUND. THE ARTIST CONSULTS AN ENCYCLOPAEDIA OF SYMBOLS, AS WELL AS THE ODDLY TITLED ATLAS OF PSYCHIATRY WHERE ONE OF THE PHOTOGRAPHS WAS PRINTED. SHE CLOSELY EXAMINES THE PRINT FOR CLUES, BUT FINDS ONLY TRACES IN TIME - A FOOTPRINT IN THE DUST.  DO THESE SIGNS CARRY A MESSAGE ACROSS TIME? WHO WAS MARIE LIEB, AND WHO TOOK THESE PHOTOGRAPHS AND WHY? TO FIND ANSWERS, SHE NEEDS TO FIND THE FILE. BUT WILL IT LEAD HER TO THE HEART OF THE LABYRINTH?

About the project

        IN 2011 ARTIST CHARLOTTE MCGOWAN-GRIFFIN CAME ACROSS TWO 19TH CENTURY PHOTOGRAPHS IN THE PRINZHORN COLLECTION. THEY SHOWED THE FLOOR INSTALLATIONS OF PSYCHIATRIC PATIENT MARIE LIEB.THE PHOTOGRAPHS WERE LABELED WITH ONLY A DATE: NOVEMBER 1894; AND A MEDICAL DIAGNOSIS: PERIODIC MANIA. ALTHOUGH THE PHOTOGRAPHS HAD BEEN WIDELY EXHIBITED AND REPRODUCED, UNTIL LAST YEAR THERE WAS NO INFORMATION ABOUT THEIR AUTHOR. MARIE LIEB'S MEDICAL FILE HAD NEVER BEEN FOUND. THE MYSTERY OF THE PHOTOGRAPHS AND THE BEAUTY OF MARIE LIEB'S SPATIAL WORKS - INSTALLATION ART BEFORE THE FACT - LED CHARLOTTE ON A 5-YEAR RESEARCH JOURNEY WHICH CULMINATED IN A STRANGE COINCIDENCE - IN MAY 2016, SHE FOUND MARIE LIEB'S LOST MEDICAL FILES.  FOLIE CIRCULAIRE TELLS THIS STORY IN THE FORM OF A 15 MIN HYBRID FORM FILM. THE EXTENSIVE ARCHIVE MATERIAL CONTAINED IN THE FILES IS CURRENTLY BEING DEVELOPED INTO A FEATURE-LENGTH PROJECT.
